Design

The Design department consists of Art and Design, Design and Technology and Construction.  Students are taught Design and Technology and Art and Design from Year 7, with Construction introduced as an option in Year 9.

Design is an inspiring discipline, which truly allows all students to develop their creative and problem solving skills.  Through the study of a deign subject, students not only develop subject specific skills, but they will also develop their ability to work independently, work as part of a team, manage their time, take risks, critically analyse and carry out research.

The United Kingdom is a world leader in all areas of Design.  In 2018, Design sectors contributed £85 billion to the UK economy, which is an estimated 7% of its total GVA (Gross Value Added).  The Design economy currently employs 1.7 million people in approximately 78,000 design based firms.

Design is clearly a vital subject area and students at Highfields will develop their fundamental design skills, whilst working in a fun, creative and engaging way.  Our ultimate aim is for students to appreciate the huge impact design plays in our lives and give them the tools and skills to fully exploit the possibilities design can provide.
