“The curriculum meets students’ needs and enables personal choices.”

Our Curriculum

We want our students to become successful learners who enjoy and value the opportunities provided for them at Highfields.

We are proud of our curriculum; it is broad, balanced and relevant to the needs of all our students. It is designed to provide them with a wealth of experiences and opportunities so they can ‘be the best that they can be’. Through our rich and extended curriculum, we firmly believe that students are equipped with the knowledge, skills and aspirations to be successful in all aspects of their life.

Our Key Stage 3 curriculum provides a very strong foundation for success at Key Stage 4. It offers both a combination of tradition and innovation. There is a strong emphasis on the ‘basics’ ensuring that students make their expected progress in English and Mathematics in order for them to be successful at GCSE and beyond. Students study a broad range of subjects which promotes their appreciation and understanding of the Arts, Health and Wellbeing, Innovation, Creativity, Enterprise and Citizenship in addition to the EBacc and the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science.

At Key Stage 4, students have the opportunity to continue to study 3 subjects of their choice in addition to English, Maths, Science, Citizenship and PSHE. Curriculum choice is informed by a comprehensive Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance programme, ensuring students choose the most appropriate pathways to realise their aspirations and goals.

Our curriculum not only develops student’s knowledge in a range of subjects, it enables them to develop skills required to become independent, creative and innovative learners. At all key stages we ensure that our students have access to a wide range of extracurricular visits, trips and visitors which complement and broaden their curriculum and contribute to their personal development.

Our curriculum offers a range of progression routes and has enabled students to gain enormous examination success which has given them access to the full range of career and life opportunities. At the end of Year 11, many students join our vibrant and thriving Sixth Form where we offer an extensive range of A Level, Applied and enrichment courses.

Curriculum subjects are organised within four Learning Schools:

PE and Performing Arts are strong features of our curriculum and all offer a wide range of extracurricular activities.

We believe that every child matters and that every child can be successful. National data and internal assessment arrangements are used to set individual and aspirational targets for every student. Parents are kept informed of their child’s progress on a regular basis. When we identify that students are not making their expected progress, we work in partnership with parents to ensure they are kept on track to achieve their full potential.
