Our students are given a wide range of opportunities to develop leadership skills in preparation for life beyond Highfields. The Student Leadership programme has been developed as the result of students, teachers and support staff working together to create opportunities for our students to build confidence and raise aspirations.
The Student Leadership opportunities at Highfields support the school’s aims to be a place where all students enjoy to learn and nurture their creativity, try new things, find solutions to problems and embrace responsibilities.
Highfields runs a number of Student Leadership groups, ranging from the Debate Team to our Remembrance Ambassadors - who help to deliver a range of remembrance events to honour those who died in war - and our Amnesty Group, which meets weekly to investigate human rights across the world.
Our Senior Team - made up of the school’s Head Boy and Head Girl, deputies and team members - works throughout the year to support various school activities and events, such as supporting fundraising drives for the school’s chosen charities, assisting with the annual musical production and organising sports tournaments.
Highfields’ Literacy Champions meet to promote the importance of reading and writing, developing links across the world and sharing opinions about texts they have enjoyed, whilst our Photography Club was launched by students to encourage and inspire others to take an interest in the art of photography.
Each year, our charity committee invites students to select one national campaign to support - such as Comic Relief or Children in Need - as well as one charity or good cause, such as Teenage Cancer Trust, and then works throughout the year to organise a number of fundraising initiatives involving fellow students and staff, ranging from fancy dress days to cake sales.
New for the 2016/17 academic year is the Pursuing Excellence Student Leadership group, run by some of Highfields’ highest achieving Year 12 students, who deliver revision workshops, offer coaching, guidance and a fortnightly meeting for current year 11 students.
Highfields’ Student leadership programme plays an important part in allowing our students to realise their potential, enriching the curriculum by building their skills, confidence and motivation, whilst enabling them to become advocates for their own needs and the needs of others.
At Highfields, we believe that investment in Student Leadership is a direct investment in tomorrow’s leaders, which is why we actively encourage students to get involved in the many opportunities on offer.
