Talented athletes from Highfields are celebrating being crowned winners of the prestigious City Athletics Championships.
Members of Highfields' Year 8 Athletics team picked up the first-place trophy for their age group in the championships, held at Aldersley Leisure Village.
They won first place in their age category as Year 7s last year and are delighted to have repeated their success.
Students are tested in a number of disciplines including shot-put, discus, javelin, 100m, 200m, 300m, 800m and 1,500m, long jump, high jump and triple jump, as well as the 4X100m relay as part of the annual tournament.
Each athlete takes part in a maximum of three disciplines during the tournament, which sees students from all of Wolverhampton’s secondary schools compete against each other.
Individual scores are tallied together to establish an overall winning boys and girls team for each age group as well as overall championship-winning teams.
Teams competed in a first round of the tournament last month, with the best 6 competitors from each age group selected to go through to the finals. A total of 12 Highfields students from Year 7, 8 and 9 made it through to the finals, with the Year 8 team winning the overall first prize for their age category.
Mr J.Birks, Head of Boys’ PE, said: “It is a fantastic achievement for our Year 8 team to win the trophy, especially after their success last year.
“All of the athletes involved should feel very proud of how they performed and I hope their achievements will be an inspiration to other students at the school to get involved with sporting activities.”
