Budding athletes of the future are preparing to showcase their skills on the field and track in this year’s City Championships, after celebrating success in last year’s tournament.
Members of the Highfields Year 7 Athletics team picked up the first-place trophy for their age group in the City Championships at Aldersley Leisure Village last summer - and are now hoping to repeat the success in the Year 8 age group in this year’s competition.
Students are tested in a number of disciplines including shot-put, discus, javelin, 100m, 200m, 300m, 800m and 1,500m, long jump, high jump and triple jump, as well as the 4X100m relay as part of the annual tournament.
Each athlete can take part in a maximum of three disciplines during the tournament, which sees students from all of Wolverhampton’s secondary schools compete against each other.
Individual scores are tallied together to establish an overall winning boys and girls team for each age group as well as overall championship-winning teams.
Mr J.Birks, Head of PE, said: “It was a wonderful achievement for the team to win the Year 7 athletics trophy. The last time we won was in 1997.
“I hope we can repeat that success again in this year’s tournament, which will be held in July. We will start training for the championships after the Easter break and hope more students will come forward to get involved as well as the members of last year’s trophy-winning team.”
