Careers guidance

Highfields encourages its students to look ahead to life after school to ensure they make the right choices for the future.

As well as providing students with the academic foundation to succeed, we pride ourselves on the opportunities we give them to fully prepare them for the future, ranging from trips, visits, roadshows and careers events.

Students get the chance to visit universities to get experience of life in higher education whilst the school also runs annual trips to the Skills Show at Birmingham’s NEC. The event is the UK’s biggest skills and careers event, which is held in collaboration with hundreds of organisations including colleges, training providers and employers, with the aim of inspiring young people through hands-on workshops and demonstrations as well as giving them access to expert careers advice.

For the past two years, Highfields has been proud to host Jaguar Land Rover’s prestigious careers roadshow, aimed at providing students and visitors with knowledge and guidance to succeed in a career in engineering, whilst the school has welcomed a number of special guest speakers and businesspeople to inspire students with their own success stories, including writer Satnam Sanghera, soul superstar - and former pupil - Beverley Knight and Poundland founder, Steve Smith.

Trips and activities are organised by individual departments to give our students a better insight into particular careers, such as visits to the Houses of Parliament for students interested in pursuing a career in politics or trips to the theatre and visits from musicians to inspire students hoping for a future in performing arts. Our annual work experience programme also provides all Year 11 students with invaluable hands-on experience of a career they are interested in.
